The 3 things you SHOULD know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All around Cambridgeshire we have identified more and more examples of AdBlue contamination when a driver has poured AdBlue inside their diesel tank. This is to some extent due to drivers not being aware of the right way to to make use of (take note: it's not a fuel additive), and partially because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are frequently directly next to each other on the automobile.

Now, what exactly is the issue with having AdBlue in the diesel car?

Seeing as the product is mainly deionised water, it is just like putting water into your tank. Diesel and water do not blend in any way and attempting to run a diesel car on water will never work. Also, the urea is incredibly corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is susceptible to crystallisation, damaging injectors and fuel filters. In the case you put AdBlue into the fuel tank drain it immediately. And definitely take care not to turn over the motor - not even to move it into a parking spot. In case you did start the vehicle you would almost certainly have to have the whole fuel system flushed and filters changed out.

If you find yourself in this scenario don’t panic! Call us, the UK’s Best fuel contamination business. Our engineers have the technical competence and experience to get you back on your way swiftly and efficiently, without mess or hassle.

Marine Fuel Drains

If it turns out there is the wrong fuel, or perhaps contaminated fuel (most commonly water contaminated or old fuel) in a boat we can help drain it. Assuming that the boat is either dry-docked, or secured near to a motor vehicle parking bay we will be able to reach the tanks and drain out the fuel. We've done quite a few fuel drains at marinas and boatyards nationwide.

Wrong Fuel in Car in CB23 Postcode - Caxton Misfueling

What a fantastic night of uninterrupted sleep! It was 7:00 in the morning on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday and I was en route to assist an elder lovely lady after she had put contaminated fuel in her diesel dad's Porsche Carrera GT in Caxton. I'd been told she had left the filling station and pulled up in a rural lane on the way to visit her family. I plugged the location into the Satnav and got there inside an hour or so. I arrived at the car and removed the contaminated fuel from the vehicle. Whilst I was doing the drain she said, "I am becoming fairly absent-minded in my senior years and forgot about the car working with diesel as I'd only got it a few days back because my previous car, which I'd had for in excess of twenty years, finally died on me". I got the drain done and she gave me a peppermint and thanked me for my hard work. Such a delightful Cambridgeshire lady!

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
